September (aka the Gateway to Fall) is here! In Wisconsin it means that we’re subjected to just about every season in a matter of a single week, and Wisconsinites across the state are rejoicing as football Demi-God Aaron Rodgers returns to the field. I love the energy that seems to hang in the air as the seasons transition, and here are a few updates on what I’ve been up to:
100 Days of Self Care
After a recent stint in the ER for dehydration, it became clear that I needed to take time to slow down and focus on my well-being. A few days ago I began recognizing #100DaysOfSelfCare, which is a commitment I feel will help me appreciate the small moments in the day while holding myself accountable towards my wellness goals. If you’ve been looking for an excuse that slow down, I encourage you to join me (even if it’s just for a few days)!
Wisconsin/Illinois #HRTribe Meet-up
Recently I had the opportunity to join other local members of the Southeast Wisconsin/Chicagoland HR Tribe at an actual, real-life meetup! We chose to have a tour and lunch (translation = Beer and Cheese Curds) at Lakefront Brewery in Milwaukee’s Riverwest neighborhood, which is my stomping grounds and the namesake of Lakefront’s most popular beer: Riverwest Stein. It was so exciting to meet up with peers with a similar amount of energy for the HR Profession; being connected on Twitter made me feel that I was already well acquainted with these folks whom I had never met. If you’ve been considering putting together or attending a meet-up in your locale, I highly recommend!
Wisconsin SHRM 2018
The 2018 Wisconsin State SHRM Conference is just a few weeks away, and the first full day (October 11th) happens to be my birthday! I’m excited to attend the conference for the first time since 2012, and this will be my first time as a post-college professional. As I recently made the transition to Employee Relations, I’m looking forward to attending sessions on managing on and off-duty misconduct, reducing drama in the workplace, and learning about HR’s role in the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements. If you’re attending I’d love to say Hi!, and for those not attending I can guarantee I’ll be tweeting my experience using hashtags #WISHRM and #WISHRM18.
What I’m Reading
I love used bookstores. Getting lost poring through the shelves for hidden gems is one of the activities that keep me at peak zen. The problem I have is I love looking for and buying new titles but I can never find the time to actually read them. As part of my 100 Days of Self Care, making time for reading (even if it’s just for 10-15 minutes a day!) will be one of my major priorities (along with staying hydrated and getting more exercise).
With everything that’s been happening in my life, I figured that Arianna Huffington’s Thrive will be the perfect compliment towards my self-improvement goals. I look forward to sharing my favorite ideas and excerpts, and am always looking for recommendations for future reading.
I want to thank everyone that are continuing to support my blog, which is still in its rebellious teenager stage. I look forward to meeting and working with many more of you in the future!
